Amsterdam

Here we come!

We occasionally make the apartment available to family and friends. The purpose of this website is to make your stay at our apartment more comfortable and pleasant, and to assist you with practical aspects of the apartment, the neighbourhood, and the city of Amsterdam

Location

The apartment  is located in the centre of Amsterdam, at 15 minutes by foot from the Central Station. It has a gorgeous view over the Prinsengracht canal

It is on the border of the two most interesting and beautiful areas in the centre of Amsterdam: the “Grachtengordel” (Canal Ring), with the thousands of 17th century houses that are part of the UNESCO world heritage, and the “Jordaan” Quarter with its picturesque streets and lively cafés, some of whose singing bartenders made it big on the national stage

Central Station

How to get there

By train 🚂 The Central Station is the main railway hub in Amsterdam. From here you walk in 15 minutes to the apartment

By tram 🚃 Take line 17 or 13 at Central Station and get out at Westermarkt (3 stops). Take the Prinsengracht on your right. Then walk up the Prinsengracht to the corner with the Tuinstraat (left side of the Prinsengracht)

By bus 🚌 This is the most economical way to travel to Amsterdam. Flixbus stops at Amsterdam Sloterdijk station. From there, take the train to the Central Station

By air 🛩 Take the train from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Central Station

By car 🚘 Better park your car at the edge of Amsterdam where parking is still free, and take public transport to the centre (45 minute tram or bus ride). Driving in the centre of Amsterdam is discouraged (“autoluw”) by the city government. It is slow because, apart from main arteries, you share narrow streets with cyclists and pedestrians. Street parking in the centre will set you back up to €150/day. Some parking garages have less extortionate prices but are still quite expensive compared with many other cities. There is also a ‘valet’ parking service that is better priced than parking garages

How to get around

By bike 🚲 Do as the locals do, this is by far the most convenient and fastest way to get around. There are many bike rental shops all over town. A shop that we like between the apartment and the Central Station is Frederic Rent-a-Bike, a small shop with a large variety of bikes

By foot🚶🏻‍♂️Walking is an excellent way to get around. You can walk in an hour from one side of the centre to the other far side. Beware of cyclists though, don’t step off the sidewalk without looking

By boat 🛶 Canal boat operator Stromma offers hop-on hop-off services that take you by boat along different sights; there is a stop at🚶🏻‍♂️5 minutes from the apartment in front of the Anne Frank House. If you want to rent your own boat, Boats4rent  (Nassaukade opposite nr 155,🚶🏻‍♂️14 minutes from the apartment) has relatively good rates

By public transport 🚃 Convenient to get to destinations that are a bit further or outside the centre. You can buy one-off tickets on trams, buses or ticket booths in metro stations. On trams, there is one entrance at about 2/3 from the front, with a ticket booth inside; the other doors are exits; some trams don’t have a booth inside any more, but only vending machines. On buses, entrance and ticket sales are in the front

Taxis and Uber 🚖 Taxis are an easy way to get around, but Amsterdam has one of the highest taxi rates in the world. Taxis are not used to being flagged on the street, it is common to call them to where you need them or take them at one of the many taxi standsUber is convenient and active in Amsterdam, but also with them prices are higher than in many other cities

Pre-paid Cards

If you plan on doing a lot of activities, the ‘I amsterdam’ City Card may be worthwhile, video. Included in the price of the card is access to most museums, public transport, a 24 h bike rental, and a canal boat tour. The card is available from 24h to 5 days with prices starting at €65

If you plan on using public transport a lot, you may want to get pre-paid ‘OV chip’ cards (one per passenger) with which you can check in and out and have lower fees per trip. You can purchase these cards at ticketing machines at the Central Station and metro stations. The Netherlands has an annoying system where you need to check out when you exit; don’t forget to do that or your credit will run out very quickly (in case you forgot, click here to reclaim your credit). You can also get public transport tickets for periods from 24h to 4 days

Museum cards give access to most state-sponsored museums in the Netherlands, including 40 in Amsterdam. They have an annual fee of €65 (half of that for kids)
