Waste and Recycling

Containers for paper and glass are a short walk from the apartment: 🚶3 Minutes to the Noordermarkt paper and glass containers

General waste disposal is a bit of a hassle. Garbage pick-up days have been re-introduced, and many general waste containers have been removed from the centre.

On garbage days, you can leave the bags in the street: 1) On Tuesday and Friday morning from 6-7:30 am, garbage bags can be put outside the house, at the other side of the street below the mural in front of the small garden. Many people put their bags outside already the night before, so on Monday and Thursday night. The garbage truck passes around 8 am. 2) On Monday and Thursday morning from 6-7:30 am, the bags can be put at the other side of the Prinsengracht canal (🚶🏻‍♂️2 minutes). 3) On Wednesday and Saturday morning from 6-7:30 am, the bags can be put at the other side of the Brouwersgracht (🚶🏻‍♂️6 minutes).

If you need to throw out general waste on other days, there are two options: the nearest general waste container is at the Spuistraat 73 (🚶🏻‍♂️8 minutes). Alternatively, if you plan to walk to the Central Station, there is a general waste container which is a short detour on the way from the apartment to the Central Station, opposite Westerdok 11 (🚶🏻‍♂️12 minutes from the apartment).

Food: Some of Our Favourite Take-out Places

There are many restaurants that do mainly take-out; some have a small dine-in area. The locals, rather than ordering via Uber Eats, generally make a call to give their order and then pick it up themselves

Secret Gardens

The Jordaan is littered with ‘Hofjes’, inner gardens where small houses are built. They were constructed in the 17th and 18th century by wealthy citizens as a charitable way to provide free or low-cost housing to poor or elderly people. Many of them are open to the public.
